Our Door is Always Open
Riverdale Community Midwives wishes to acknowledge the land our midwifery clinic operates on. For thousands of years this land has been the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Toronto (Tkaronto) is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples from across Turtle Island. As midwives, we are grateful to live and work on this land, and strive to make our clinic home a place where healing can occur.
For over 25 years, our home at 48 River Street has been a hub for providing primary midwifery care to the community and, remarkably, many babies have been born right here. We have always offered our clinic to families as a safe space for birth, and there have been times when clients arriving for their regular appointment have witnessed a baby’s first cry sounding from the room upstairs. We hope you will feel at ease in our cozy, home-like environment, and be encouraged to take an active role in your pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
On a walk around the neighbourhood, you will notice an ever-growing field of concrete abodes reaching for the sky, heritage buildings re-imagined, detached family homes and not enough community housing; the bright voices of children; community centres and school-yard vegetable gardens; the Toronto Birth Centre; community health centres, the old cigar factory; coffee shops, small eateries and markets; and various outbursts of street art that reflect the multi-cultural abundance of the area.
