Our Urban Angel
Riverdale Community Midwives holds privileges at St. Michael’s Hospital of Toronto. The private birthing suites, overlooking the Toronto skyline from the 15th floor, are spacious and bright. (Our midwives and clients have witnessed some marvelous sunrises here with a new baby in arms.) Jacuzzi tubs are available for labour only.
For clients who feel most comfortable in a hospital setting, or in cases where your midwife recommends hospital birth, this will be your birthplace! As your primary care provider, your midwife cares for you throughout labour and birth, calling a second midwife when you are fully dilated, just like any other birthplace.
Getting Ready
By 36 weeks, you should have a small hospital bag packed; we’ve created a checklist to help you with this simple task.
Going Home
Unless there are medical indications for a longer stay, you and your new baby are ready to go home and snuggle into bed about three hours after the birth. Early discharge from hospital is a hallmark feature of midwifery care. Your midwife will faciliate your departure and see you off at street level of the hospital. Within 24 hours after discharge, your midwife will begin follow up home visits for you and the baby.
